Disney Princess Historical Costume Influences: Aurora (The Sleeping Beauty)
It’s a young girl’s 16th birthday and her three “aunts” tell her that they are actually good fairies, that she’s really a princess named “Aurora’ and they are taking her back to the castle to meet her King and Queen parents.
However, evil fairy, Maleficent enchants Aurora who wanders the castle and finds the one spinning wheel still left in the attic. She pricks her finger and falls into a death-like sleep, which was the curse Maleficent set for not having been invited to baby Aurora’s birth announcement party.
Set in a fantasy historical setting, the Disney telling is a product of the period in which the movie was made, and thus, her costumes are fantasy historical as well.
This article analyzes the 1959 Disney princess and discusses the historical influences in their costumes.

Cinderella is about a beautiful, perfect-in-every way girl whose deadbeat father goes and dies on her, leaving her with her step-mother and two step-sisters who treat Cinderella as their own personal maid. With the help of Fairy Godmother, Cinderella goes to the ball in a fabulous pouffy dress. There, the Prince thinks she’s hot, but she has to be home at midnight so runs off leaving a shoe.

Snow White is the heroine of Disney’s very first animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Based on a fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm, the story is about a princess whose evil step-mother REALLY doesn’t like her because of some serious narcissism issues.
