Disney Princess Historical Costume Influences: Aurora (The Sleeping Beauty)

It’s a young girl’s 16th birthday and her three “aunts” tell her that they are actually good fairies, that she’s really a princess named “Aurora’ and they are taking her back to the castle to meet her King and Queen parents.

However, evil fairy, Maleficent enchants Aurora who wanders the castle and finds the one spinning wheel still left in the attic. She pricks her finger and falls into a death-like sleep, which was the curse Maleficent set for not having been invited to baby Aurora’s birth announcement party.

Set in a fantasy historical setting, the Disney telling is a product of the period in which the movie was made, and thus, her costumes are fantasy historical as well.

This article analyzes the 1959 Disney princess and discusses the historical influences in their costumes.
