“In general, a good drawing usually has: large empty spaces for the eye to rest, balanced with areas of small spaces to draw the eye. Medium sized shapes fill in the inbetween spaces.”

“A nice variety of small, med and large shapes is essential to any successful character lineup. All the characters must be harmonious and work together so that all of the characters seem to come from the same world. And all of their shapes need to work with every other character so that, no matter which ones are in a scene together, they will compliment each other and not duplicate one another.”

Famed animator Ed Murrieta drops in on local art class

“This is about art.” — Ed Murrieta.

“Recently, [famed animator Ed] Murrieta braved the drive from Atlanta to Morgan County – on a weekday afternoon no less – to lead a workshop for [illustrator Melinda] Burnett’s middle school and high school art students. Murrieta, a longtime friend of Burnett, has worked with all of the animation greats including Walt Disney, Warner Bros., Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network. Introducing himself to the expectant young artists he began with smile saying, “I’m not doing cartoons today. This is about art.” A man who worked on such classics as Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid and The Powerpuff Girls not talk about cartoons? Well in the end, Murrieta did sketch a few, but the majority of his time was spent discussing the basics of drawing.”

The 12 basic principles of animation were developed by the 'old men' of Walt Disney Studios, amongst them Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, during the 1930s. These principles came as a result of reflection about their practice and through Disney's desire to use animation to express character and personality.

The video itself is a promotion not for Chipotle per se but for an iOS game that's available for free on the app store.
